“JESUS, OUR HIGH PRIEST”. SCRIPTURE READING: Hebrews 8:1-6. EXPOSITION:

In the Old Testament, the high priests were people who were ordained to enter the Holy of Holiest in the tabernacle to offer sacrifices with the blood of animals and on behalf of the people of Israel as a pardon for their sins.
The writer of this book explains how the High Priest of the New Covenant is superior to the high priests of the Old Covenant. Jesus’ priesthood is not an earthly priesthood, and the tabernacle in which the Old Testament priests offered sacrifices was just a sketch of the heavenly tabernacle, in which Jesus, our High Priest serves now. He offered His blood as a living sacrifice to atone for our sins and He is in the tabernacle always interceding on our behalf.
LESSONS/ LIFE APPLICATION:
Sacrifices for the atonement of our sins cannot be made with the blood of animals any longer; neither can it be made in a tabernacle by a priest for the pardon of our sins. But we have a High Priest, who intercedes on our behalf always. It is through this work that we are not consumed by God’s anger. We always need to be appreciative of what Christ has done and continues to do for us.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, I appreciate whatever you have done for me and continue to do for me. My heart is full of gratitude to you. Help me to remain true and faithful to you always.
MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. - Hebrews 12:14(NIV)

“AVOID SELF-GLORIFICATION”. SCRIPTURE READING: Hebrews 5:1-10. EXPOSITION:

The High Priest is the chief of the Jewish priests who represented them in matters relating to God. He offered gifts and sacrifices for sin on behalf of the people of Israel and on his own behalf. It is such an honourable thing to be a mediator between God and His people. That notwithstanding, the writer humbly submits that “no man takes this honour to himself.” In other words you cannot make yourself a High Priest. Jesus Christ who is the High Priest of all believers did not glorify Himself to become High Priest. He waited for God to call and glorify Him. Although glorious, the work of the High Priest can be very dangerous – it can become a life and death issue. In His rank of High Priest, Jesus died and presented His own blood as atonement for the sin of the world.
KEY VERSE:
And no man takes this honour to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was (Hebrews 5:4, NKJV).
LESSONS/ LIFE APPLICATION:
Becoming a pastor nowadays seems fashionable. Some make themselves into pastors and start preaching in buses as a means to their daily bread. Some do everything in their power to be ordained as leaders and officers of the church where they find themselves. It is important to wait for the Lord to call you rather than you calling yourself. Besides, we should try not to enter the ministry or leadership for personal gains.
PRAYER:
Holy Father, you are the one who calls and those whom you call you glorify. I pray that you shall call more labourers into the field. Amen.
MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more that Your companions. - Hebrews 1:9(ESV)

“JESUS CHRIST, MORE THAN THE PROPHETS AND ANGELS”. SCRIPTURE READING: Hebrews 1:5-14

EXPOSITION:
The deity of Jesus Christ has been a long standing argument in many religious circles. Some believe that He is one of the prophets while others believe that He is one of the angels of God. It seems to boggle their mind how God can become man. We have to get it straight that the incarnation of Christ is true. When Jesus came down to this earth He told His disciples, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father (God).” The book of Hebrews says that Jesus Christ is the express image of the Father. Like a rubber stamp you will not be able to make out clearly what is written on the stamp.
However, if you put it in some ink and press the stamp on a plain sheet of paper the inscription can be read clearly. Jesus has been given a much better name than the angels. The angels are instructed to worship Him as they worship God. He is as everlasting as the Father is. He is truly God.
KEY VERSE:
“Having become by so much better than the angels, as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they.” - Hebrews 1:4 (ESV)
LESSONS/ LIFE APPLICATION:
It will be unthinkable for the president of a nation to abandon his official residence and privileges and go down to an obscure village and live there. It is likely that after some time, people will doubt that He is really a President. Such was the humility displayed by Jesus Christ. We are to display such humility to others in order to reach them with the gospel.
PRAYER:
Father, I pray that I will see you in Jesus Christ as clearly as you are without any shadow of doubt about your deity. Amen.
MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more that Your companions. - Hebrews 1:9 (ESV)
